    Default The Roof.....yay...

Well today my wife went back home for thanksgiving so that means I got 10 days to enjoys doing the roof on my centurion. I started sanding out the 1/4 inch of filler. Not all done yet but got most of thick stuff out. Found a couple small holes nothing major. Not really rust holes just holes from im guessing when they welded it they burned through and just left them or never filled them. Heres a couple pics. Ill keep posting pics of my progress. Ive read through just about every roof thread so I got the idea of what Im doing but if anyone has anything they want to add feel free. Im not much of a body man but Im not affraid to try everything once so we'll see how it turns out.

That is the messy part. Too bad there isn't really any other way to do it.
    Looks great though.

Don't know if you have heard of this stuff but they make a metal filler now. It's called USC All Metal Filler. It's like in the old days where they used lead for body filler. Haven't ever used it but have heard it works very well. If I had a roof repair like that especially with the weld holes I think I would try that stuff. Don't know who makes it but maybe someone on the list will chime in that has experiance with it. Just sayin.

I have used that stuff, the worst part about those fillers are they are so hard to work with.
They are great for a base and building it up where you need it to be, but to finish sand it and paint it, you need a different material.

So this project sucks! I think the worst part about it is sanding it all nice and smooth. but im just about done. So them small holes I just packed some 5 min. steel apoxy in them and let it harden. Then i sanded it smooth you couldnt really tell there was a hole there.

This is some rust treatment I got. It sprayed on clear and then would turn black as it treated it. That stuff had to sit for 24 hours im not sure if it really works/helped

This is the first layer of some short strand fiberglass filler. I only did like 3 light layers i didnt go that thick compared to how it was before. the only "thicker" spots was where the roof had kind of a dip so i built it up a little so water wouldnt set in there.

The first two layers of fiberglass filler i was using 40 grit sandpaper then the last coat i went to a 80 grit

I think i got the fiberglass filler looking pretty good then I used some light weight bodyfiller on top of that to fill all the fiberglass imperfections and my 80 grit scratches.

thanks for doing the pics and walking us thru it. I am eager to see the finished steps of yours and get to mine cause I don't want to drive it in the rain until it is fixed. I also am sporting a good amount of duct tape on the roof and even tho it is a truck, it just isn't dignified enough for such a beautiful deserving girl!
