    Default 1996 F350 7.3 diesel/motor ???

    HELP needed
Hey everyone I have a oil burner ?? A really good friend of mine Is looking at a 96 F350 today. I always have every answer he needs but this is not my area. This is going to be his first Ford First Diesel. So what should he look out for? Below is the info for the truck and the guy wants 3000 for it. The body is in good shape so his only concern is the motor and what to look for and the problem to expect.

    1996 F350 4x4 7.3 diesel crew-cab long-bed. It has a wopping 277,xxx miles.

OIL, OIL, OIL. Oil changes are a high importance in the PSD. he should ask how often the was changed. The injectors use that oil and worn out oil lead to worn out injectors. A friend of mine here 530K miles on his 97 PSD and hasn't don anything to the engine other change the oil. They good motors and you need to look at them like anything else. It needs to run sooth and fire up around four seconds of turning the engine. Check standard stuff like oil leaks.

OK thanks. So it will be a power stroke then??? and not an IDI?? I thought there was a problem about coolant??? about cavitation or something?? IDK what it was but I cant find the post on it or if it even applies to this motor.

Well he He passed on it and I think he made a good decision. After passing on the info from here he had a good Idea of what to look out for.
He said it started right up but had a real ruff idle, and it ran real ruff up to 3 grand. It had a good fuel leak. Was Pouring oil from the rear of the motor, He said it was a stream of oil not a drip. And the main thing was when he was under the truck watching the oil There was a very loud metal on metal growling/Grinding noise from the motor.

There you go. It really isn't much different than looking at any other used vehicle. That one was self evident.
If he goes back to it again maybe make sure that isn't fuel running off the back of the engine that would explain the way it runs as the mechanical fuel pump is in the valley and when it leaks it will do that. As well as other oil leaks up there.

Auto or manual tranny? Manual tranny and you may have been hearing the dual mass flywheel everyone but bob cusses.
