7.3 swap w/turbo in my 92 Cent

So, as I said in another thread, I got my hands on a 93 non-turbo with 135k on it. I didn't get to hear it run but I was assured it was a runner when it was pulled; I did see it crank though. It's great cause it's serpentine and I believe stronger connecting rods. The van it came out of didn't have A/C, but it just so happened that I saved the one of of my parts Bronco, so with a little clearencing on the bracket for the idler pulley, it's going to bolt up nicely. So I got my old engine out (what a pain in the arse).
I'm swapping those parts over which are better.
So I'm looking for opinions on what to do while I got the new engine out? I'm going to swap the valve covers and gaskets since mine only have a few miles on them and the ones on there are leaking. Also I'm swapping one of the exhaust manifolds over as there's one with a crack. I was thinking of painting them with some high temp coatings. Anything else?

I've got lots of pics, just no way to get them off the camera. We should have the wife's laptop back from Best Buy this weekend so I'll get them up ASAP!

I think that is it. I would put it in and run it. There is nothing else cheap and easy you can do.
It never hurts to put rods and mains in, but it prolly doesn't need it.

Replace valve cover gaskets and rear main seal.

Swap your rebuilt oil cooler over from the truck motor to the van motor. They should be different, the van oil cooler should stick out more from the motor and will not clear the truck frame. On a side note I don't remember 100% if that's with IDI and DI IH engines or just just a IDI issue or a DI issue.

Your installing that turbo so you may need to trim and bent some of the fire wall back like in the turbo/head gasket article I posted for you. This would be a great time to do so with engine is out and a BFH (hammer) would be easy to use at this point to mod the fire wall for the down pipe.

Torque the head bolts an extra five pounds when you have the valve cover off for the turbo.

Don't forget to get the SCA additive from Ford so you don't lose another engine.

I would install new engine mounts as your have many years and miles on them.

Another thing you could do is get a fire wall heat shield from Ford or a junk yard for a PSD. Also you may want to replace the ac box heat wrap at this time as it's much easier to do with the engine out.

Other than pressure washing the engine compartment while the engine is out, that's about it.

Wow, really good thoughts, I didn't think about adding 5 lbs to the bolts for the turbo, I knew I could count on you. I've never done a rear seal, any instructions you could provide? Also, the coolers do seem different, the van seemed smaller in diameter.
Can I get a heat shield in there? I thought with all the turbo piping, there wasn't room.

Also, I just checked rear main seals at autozone.com, do I want rubber or teflon> And some had a couple of gasket looking things, and other only one.

The heat shield is very slim that they used for the 94 1/2 to 97 OBS truck there will be lots of room.

I should ask do you have a black rubber thing that covers your trans hump from behind the engine or silver color?

I never had to replace the rear main seal on any of mine so I am not sure what Type. I will have to check it out.

Fel Pro parts #'s 40011 or 158681 should do it.

So, I tightened the head bolts, new valve cover gaskets, painted up the engine, mounted the air conditioner and a few other things. One of the things I learned was a patch job on the new (used) engine's oil pan. So, I'm going to swap mine over. Aside from anything normal I should know, I'm looking for opinions on my thoughts on how to do this. I'm faced with trying to do this with one engine hoist and no engine stands (just tires). So, I was thinking, any reason I couldn't pull each engine up on it's back to do the swap? Do I need to remove the flexplates so the stress isn't transfered into the crank? Any other thoughts?

Yep if you pull the flex plate you can set them on the back.
Forgot about the oil pans, they did rust through just like the gas engines.
I would tip the old engine on its back and leave the new one on the hoist.

Okay, after an afternoon of loading pics on Supermotors, I finally have some pics.

So, the new engine didn't have air conditioning, and it's serpentine, and my old engine is V-belt and they don't have the same mounting. But, I actually had kept the one from the Black bronco, but I had to clearance for it.




I still have some more to do for the fitting, but at least I can mount it flush now!

Took the valve covers off, everything looks good. Replaced the valve cover gaskets and tightened the head bolts for the turbo. Also blew out the push rods to be sure there wasn't any blockage.



I painted the engine some, still have some more to do:


That's all I have for now. I'll have some more pics soon, I'll be pulling the oil pan off on Sunday. It will be interesting to see if the connecting rod was bent from the water in the combustion chamber.

blatantly off topic, but how does your cent have a 205 AND an E40D?

Am I wrong? I thought it was the 205. If not, what transfer case is it?
