I have the bronco listed for sale and I hope to sell it. If I can't sell her I have been thinking of installing a 5-speed transmission in place of the C-6. I want an over drive.

I do know the ZF would be better than the Mazda version but it's a little harder to find. Has anyone done this conversion and if so what was involved? My guees is it will be a straight forward swap but I don't have much experience with Later Model trucks. If you did do the swap where you happy with it? thanks bob

Of course the bell housings would be different, but here are some links to good info.
And myself, I wouldn't be afraid of the Mazda, if you know you got a new one, or close to it.

    and HERE
    and HERE

Give you a good start maybe.

Thanks, that will help get me started. I have found a few ZF trannies for 650 and up. One isn't far from me but it has no transfer case and I am not sure if my case will bolt up or not.

If the truck doesn't sell I will be installing a ZF by xmas.

Not sure what transfer case you have, most ZF would be in front of a 1356, not sure, but if the ZF came from a 4x4 it should bolt in.

It looks like a 1356 case.

Guys on the Full size bronco site would know, maybe one will chime in, I was thinking 1/2 tons had 1325, or 1346, or something a little different.
Maybe the dimensions are the same, but the number was different.

The person I had talked to at a junk yard over the phone said all F150 transfer cases would bolt up to the ZF but a bronco transfer case would not. ?She gave a year for the F150 transfer case and I can not recall what years it was. ?I do know that if I have an F150 case I would be fine. ?The tag appears to have been removed from my case so I am trying to ID it from a picture.

So here is where I get lost. ?I don't know if they made centurions from F150 or bronco trucks? ?I don't even know what to buy parts for yet.

I am starting to like the auto trans and I am having second thoughts about a 5 speed. ?I am thinking of changing the gears to bring the rpm's down a bit. ?What do you think? ?I like the C-6 because it's stronger than an AOD. ?I hear bad things about the AOD tarnsmissions.

I am reaaly starting to like this truck. ?I may keep it. ?It's growing on me and I think the wife likes it as well. ?We will take our first long road trip in it today. ?Gas mileage will suck compared to the explorer but I think the room inside the centurion will offset the mileage issue.

I found this: ?'87 and newer Ford full size Broncos. Special CV U-joint drive shaft required, 1356 case. There are two different 1356 cases. One with a slip yoke and one with out.

Okay, I know what they are talking about now.
Look under the truck. If it has a fixed yoke, meaning a nut holds the yoke on the back of the transfercase then it is a bronco case.
If it is a slip yoke, where the shaft will pull right off the splines then it is a F150 case.

Either way the input is the same and you should be able to slide your case on the ZF.

I am sure she just looked at part numbers and saw the number was different for the bronco, and F150.

Travler, I found a small block 4X4 zf today for $100 with out the transfer case. I will pick it up on Monday. It's missing the shifter but I am sure I can dig one up from some where.

my 88 f250 with 5 speed manual (i am sure its zf) has bw 13-45. 13-45 has a 1and 3/16 inch filler and drain plug. the 13-65 in my 92 c150 has the small square hole for a rachet.

Let me take a guess at this. The 13-45 is the stronger transfer case?

i would not say ether way. it seams from 87 til 91 you could get ether one, 92-96 you got all 13-56. this info is out of chilton. I also dont see a 13-45 with electric shift, may have some thing to do with it, just my guess.

It appears my case has a spot where the electric shift would bolt up? I will be repalceing the rear fuel pump today so I will look for the drain plug size.
