Here's another post install write up.

I came across a kit for the 460 on a clearance rack at the local custom truck center, price $50. Just couldn't pass up, had to buy it.

Simple install.

Tools needed:
Drill w/ 5/16 bit
Nut drivers for hose clamps
2 wrenches (both 7/16 I think

First remove stock air box and cold air duct. Loosen clamps at both intake tubes to airbox. One bolt at center front and 1 at center rear of air box holds it in. Remove oil breater vent tube.

Install of filter:

Mount L bracket to end of filter and slip filter onto "adapter". Position filter when stock box was and mark holes. Drill them out and mount filter and adapter.

Connect new vent hose to filter and valve cover breather with new clamps.

Connect intake tubes to filter and tighten clamps.

Apply cool K&N stickers to truck. Don't forget the CARB exempt one.

Install done.

Quick and simple. Took me about 30 minutes.

Here's another angle of the filter. You can't see where the vent tube connects between and just under the two intake tubes. Also notice the oval shape of the filter, it gave me enough room to mount an MSD bo under there without blocking airflow.

This show where two of the holes are drilled. The third is at bottom and goes thru the plastic wheel well.

I checked the K&N website and this kit (part# 63-1014) will fit all '96 gas motors w/o mass air and '97 7.5l w/o mass air.

Any improvment in power? *Don't know, can't gett enough traction to tell.

Definately makes a cool whooooosh sound when step on it http://www.fourdoorbronco.com/temp/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue3.gif

Told the wife if she ever hears that when she drives, she just burnt an 1/8 of a tank. *

On the road test I managed to burn 1/4 tank in less then 15 miles. *Small price to pay for an ear to ear grin http://www.fourdoorbronco.com/temp/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue3.gif

Great write up AK. I have this setup on my '89 C-350. It was good for all most a 1mpg improvement on mine, but yes, you did have to avoid the "wooooosh". *http://www.fourdoorbronco.com/temp/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/HistericalSmiley.gif
And 50 bucks is a killer deal.

Have almost the same setup on mine, the only difference on mine is that it's a big round filter instead of an oval.mine has the mass-air system. But still has the woosh(gas guzzling)sound http://www.fourdoorbronco.com/temp/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/action-smiley-033.gif

I could use all of the help that I can get with MPG *http://www.fourdoorbronco.com/temp/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

Would this help any on my 88' F350?

Any other MPG improvers that are simple installs like this? *http://www.fourdoorbronco.com/temp/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/offtopic.gif

Just about any upgraded intake would help.

Aftermarket ignition like Jacobs, MSD, Accel, Ect...

Free flow exaust(sp?) like better cat or headers. These are a little more than just simple bolt-ons and bit on the spendy side for a complete system.

Synthetic oils in the engine, tranny, and diffs will help reduce drag= better MPG

The above items will help. The price you pay will decide if it is worth it to you.

The cheapest thing would be to run the proper PSI in you tires, but it's a comprimise between ride quality and MPG.

Tire choice makes a BIG difference, skinny with hwy tread and properly sized for your gearing would be ideal. Just dosn't look really cool, for me atleast.

Dobs',
The K&N is well worth it as far as performance and mpg's.
That kit used to be 70-80 bucks back in about '96 '97.
Last price I saw it was 150-180 depending. They got popular so they upped the price.
The guys on Fullsize Bronco and others have just used the appropriate filter ordered from K&N , and then fabbed up some flat stock for the brackets needed. This should drop the price back down to about 60-80 dollars. I would not pay for the new kit, just paying for the name, but K&N is a good filter.
A good set of headers would help, but the cost of the headers will take a long time to pay for themselves if you are putting them on to increase mpg's.
I put Doug Thorlys on the '89 and they did help mpg's and power, but they were close to 700 bucks. And yes there are cheaper headers, but you get what you pay for.
A high flow cat. and larger pipes will help also, and the high flows can be found fairly cheap, the one on my '94 was only $130, can't remember where I got it tho.......sorry.
My '89 has no cat........shhhhhh..........and runs a couple of shorty glass packs.
Best performance on the '89 was when I had the stock cat. still on and was running 3" pipes out the back with no mufflers.
The length of the pipes after the cat. helped to mellow out the ex. and it sounded great.
'89 got up to 16-17 freeway with K&N, Headersand 3" pipes off of the stock cat.
That was on a motor with 200K+ miles on it using little to no oil.
If it were me, I would go with K&N and take the stock muffler off and straight pipe it.

I would have to agree, anything helps, I have K&N in everything I own except the Centurion, but the Centurion is a little different breed than the 460.

Oh wait I don't have one on the lawnmower or weedeater, yet.
(just didn't want to lead anyone astray)

Anyway, it does help, and yep cut away just about as much of the factory exhaust as you can. Gas engines need a little back pressure, but not much.

Hey D, I just read the "ghetto fab K&N" post on FSB. *Sounds like an inexpensive way to get set up with a K&N filter. *I liked thier Idea of useing stainless pipe for the bling bling factor. http://www.fourdoorbronco.com/temp/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rockon.gif
