Truck lost the water pump last night which in turn took out both belts and the air pump. Going to tear apart the truck today/tomorrow and g ahead ad do the timing chain kit and the seals there on the front of the engine, if you have any recommendations, well wishes etc hey this is the place to post them http://www.fourdoorbronco.com/temp/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Ouch, what were you doing when that happened? Never did that much work at once. Have fun.

How about slippin in a powerstroke in place of that gasser?

finances don't include a powerstroke right now LOL

I got the waterpump off the alternator the airpump brackets, etc. The fan shroud etc.

I'm beat. Bought little over 200 inparts today. Got to go grab the timing chain kit tonight yet still. blah.

Major is the word for it, hopefullyI remember how to put thisback together *http://www.fourdoorbronco.com/temp/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif * * http://www.fourdoorbronco.com/temp/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Hmm well waterpump was my project last weekend not too bad.

Make sure you rent or buy the fan clutch removal tool. It will be a large wrench to hold the fan clutch nut and another piece to hold the waterpump pully still so you can loosen the clutch. They are made to attach 1/2 inch drive rachets to if you need more leverage.

for the timing chain there are two indentions one on the cam gear and one on the crank gear pay attention to thier orientation when you take it apart. It's been a while since I took one a part so I don't remember exactly which way they go but it is VERY important to put it back the way you began. You should put the engine at top dead center. (cylinder 1) Which will make the timing gear allignment work much better.

Oh and I'd replace the rad hoses as well if you haven't already repalced them recently or bought them with your other parts.

Wish I was closer to lend a hand sweetie. Ask Ford which handed threading the fan clutch has, if you still haven't taken it off. If it wont come off easily and it may not, I had to do all sorts of things to get mine off( although it's a PS) I in the end had to slightly heat the large nut that the fanclutch attaches to the water pump snot to, to get it to come off. ( I do mean slightly no red hot glowing metal by all means.
Good Luck....Mo

OK heres the real question at this point. I have off most of the front of the engine, so while I am here what else should I be doing?http://www.fourdoorbronco.com/temp/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif I am half tempted to do everything I can while I have it taken apart. Thoughts?

What else can I do??? *I would like to take care of as much of the oil leaks as possible, etc??? What is anyroutine maint I should do while it is apart?http://www.fourdoorbronco.com/temp/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

Thoughts???

And yep quite the project to start on *http://www.fourdoorbronco.com/temp/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

But hey I have to figure this stuff out at some point.

ok you're luck you've got the old style fan setup which makes it much much easier. http://www.fourdoorbronco.com/temp/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif *so disregard my previous statement. *Honestly even though you've got the whole front of the engine apart there really isn't much routine maint that would need to be done around there. just make sure you get all the gaskets sealed well and me personally I'd use a touch of rtv on all of them just as a bit of overkill.

MOFOCO1
10-24-2004, 11:01 PM
Ditto. My thoughts exactly on the RTV. If you really wanted to do something D you could drop the oil pan and it yours calls for a 2 piece rear main seal you could change that. Many a leak is fixed with the pan and rear main seal and timimg cover gaskets. Change the oil of course, check and replace any hoses that haven't ben changed as well as the t-belt if that is old.....Mo

WoW, you dove right into that head first.
Looks great so far.
There really isn't much else to do up front while you are in there.
If the engine was rebuilt or everhauled before you bought it, you may not need a timing chain, just check the slack in it before you decide to replace it. Timing chains in the 460's last a lot of miles, I doubt you need one already, if it was replaced when overhauled, so save your money.

Yes pulling the pan is a good Idea, but being a 2wd I don't think you can without pulling the motor, even with the front cover already off.

I think you have done all you need to do, just put gaskets in the timing cover and start the long process of putting it back togethter.

Was there any other way?http://www.fourdoorbronco.com/temp/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif I think I am incredibly stupid for doing it this way, but we'll all see how it turns out; and I am not too embarressed to let you guys know if I screw up http://www.fourdoorbronco.com/temp/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

So basically replace what I am replacing:

Water Pump
Water Pump filler neck
Air (smog) pump
Timing cover seals
Timing gasket
couple of hoses

and call it good?

Then put back on timing stuff
water pump
smog pump
alt
powersteering pump
alt bracket
fan

Well wasted a lot of time yesterday.

I finally figured out how to get the timing chain cover off. But it still isn't all of the way off.

To remove it I found my harmonic balancer. Probably sounds silly to you guys but I had really hoped not to have to pull that last one. So anyhow, it got marked with an oil crayon for how to line it up and omg was it hard to get out the center bolt with the stupid thing turning. It came out, then removed four bolts and it needed to be pulled. So I go to oreilleys. They have 3 or 4 harmonic balancer pullers that look kinda close. I go with one. Get it home and the "universal puller" is obviously not meant for my huge truck. The bolts for pulling were a swimmin in the holes. And the "crow foot" puller would not line up with my bolt holes which were set much furthur apart. So back to Oreilleys where I could swear he almost wasn't going to let me return it and I guess I can understand because I could have removed the balancer in that time frame if it had been the right one but it wasn't!!!! *So return it with a smile and a please, and get told at 9 o clock at night that I need a 8 inch gear puller. Do what? Like harbor freight was gonna still be open. I can kinda see into the timing chain cover as everything else is finally off (I was held up by a generous application of silicone (You know Erik it doesn't look like anything ever leaked past that *http://www.fourdoorbronco.com/temp/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif ), and then 3 bolts that you need to look for on the BOTTOM of the whole cover in what I assume is the oil pan. The first bolts towards the front of the engine (13mm), on the drivers side it is first two and passenger only the first one and it lets go of the timing chain cover. I can see the chain and it definately looks like it was replaced. What I don't see and what has probably plagued this engine is a seal on this timing chain cover. As in NOTHING at all. There is no old seal. The only seal on it at all is what Erik added.

So another day and I should pick up a gear puller today.

Sounds like you are making progress. Even though you had a frustrating evening.
The balancer cannot be pulled with the crows foot style puller. There is a inner and outer part to it, and they are held together by rubber. If you use the crows foot style you will pull the balancer apart and destroy it.

Let me look for a pick of the correct puller, there are a couple styles that are very cheap and most stores (except Oreilly's) should have.

Otherwise sounds like you are very close. The big center bolt on the balancer is very difficult to remove without an impact wrench.

Traveler
10-26-2004, 08:42 AM
you need this type of puller, but they don't give dimensions, but it should work.

That is the kind of puller I bought last night it definately does not fit the crow foot you see in the pics doesn't line up with the bolt holes http://www.fourdoorbronco.com/temp/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

Audra
10-26-2004, 09:07 AM
The harbor frieght one is the closest. See the very short thicker bolts up top in the set? Those should work, cept the crow foot still has the wrong spacing. My bolt holes are in a square.

Traveler
10-26-2004, 09:30 AM
Don't use that style, that will destroy the balancer.

Why do you need all 3 bolts? why can't you just use 2?
The 2 directly across from each other.

Audra
10-26-2004, 09:39 AM
I tried last night and they didn't line up right. Maybe with a larger crow foot. Mine was small enough that the bolts had to bend out at an angle to reach the bolts...and then they weren't the right size anyways http://www.fourdoorbronco.com/temp/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

Traveler
10-26-2004, 10:37 AM
That is the way to pull it though. Yep it the bolts were bent out at an angle they wouldn't start in the holes anyway, they would just cross thread, and if that would allow to pull the balancer, the pulleys would not go back on correctly.
There are lots of different sizes to that style puller.
Using those two will work, just need to find a little bigger puller, which of course already sounds like what you are doing.

okies tonight I got the crankshaft pulley off and the harmonic balancer off and the woodruff key (fun, not!) off, and pulled off the timing chain cover. How much slack should the chain have? Should the slack on both sides of the chain be even? How much slack is acceptable? Anyway to check and make sure the timing chain is like it should be? Now that everything is off of the front of the engine I started scraping off all of the old seals and the silicone. Started cleaning the timing chain cover, and took all of the shredded belt out of the alternator (not fun- time consuming), etc. Harbor Freight's kit did have the right size bolts and the crow's foot had the holes in the right spots to remove my stuff http://www.fourdoorbronco.com/temp/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Best part? It rang up for 6 bucks. Cheapest thing I have had to buy for the project so far.

timing chain does not have to have equal tension on both sides there should be a slight (<0.25") play in the middle of the chain's free sapces. *I don't have specs here @ work not that I recall ever having seen any, I've just replaced them when rebuilding engines and once when it was listed as routine maint in my stepmom's rice rocket.

Traveler
10-27-2004, 08:36 AM
If you turn the camshaft gear, or the crank shaft just enough to take all the slack in the chain out on one side, the other side should not have more than 1/2" of movement away from a straight line drawn between the two gears.

Or if you take the slack out on one side, you should not be able to move the chain side to side more than an inch.

Since you are ready to go back together, when you use silicon on the gaskets, put a very light coat on. When you put the gasket on it, let the silicone dry for 15 or 20 minutes. Otherwise when you tighten up the cover it will push the gasket out.

And don't forget to put the balancer seal back in before you put the cover on.

Audra
10-27-2004, 08:38 AM
Right now as it sits it has 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch of play on one side and a solid one inch of play on the other, any way to tighten that or do I need to? Not sure I understand entirely how much is acceptable. :/

Audra
10-27-2004, 08:39 AM

oil sending unit. Well look inside the circle. that is usually where it is, has one wire going to it.
Based on your oil pressure readings, I think you need one, or if you can see it leaking, then you need one.
If it still looks dry leave it alone, they are not that hard to change if you want to later.

If you really feel adventurous, pull the filter/cooler housing. Access may not get any easier.

Looking for a timing chain measurement pic.

Traveler
10-27-2004, 09:28 AM
Rotate one gear to get all the slop in the chain on one side.

Now move the chain between the arrows in the pic below.

If you can move it more than an inch. You need a chain.

There are other issues related, end play, that is the distance the camshaft or crankshaft move in and out of the block. That really doesn't make a difference with regards to what you are working on.

Next thing. If you can grab the crankshaft or camshaft and move it up and down or side to side, that means the bearings are showing some wear, and it is very difficult to measure whether they are okay or not.
But, if you have that up and down movement, that will make the chain looser, and a new chain will not be any tighter.

I assume you have already checked the timing marks as shown in the picture. However I doubt they are off because when it runs, it runs very well.

you can disregard the oil pressure sending unit b/c according to my pretty picture books it's on the back of the engine just above the transmission http://www.fourdoorbronco.com/temp/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/down.gif

Traveler has a good idea about going ahead and pulling the oil filter adapter off while you're at it as It is not easily accessable normally, not to say that it'll be a breeze now.

<---tired, hungry.

Night;y update. Looking at the timing chain decided there was too much slack and bought the 3 piece set. Getting off the top gear was actually the hard one and lining up the timing marks. Got the new timing chain and gears on then scraped the old seals off of the engine. Sprayed some carb cleaner on the engine. Really trying to clean it up good to be sure this baby seals up right, had a friend take the timing chain cover to work where he can toss it in a vat of parts cleaner and get that the rest of the way sparkly clean.

My current timing had still been "on" but the bottom gear teeth show major wear. The chain was also stretched about and inch out too much. I'll post pics when I sleep again and have energy.

It kinda does, when I printed it out and took it to the garage it could fit in any of several bolt holes there http://www.fourdoorbronco.com/temp/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif I think it was just getting too late as that bracket was like midnight last night and I finally said time to go to bed. Today hopefully it will all be clear. Good chance the truck could be started tonight.

two red circles, that is where the bolts go. With the alternator laying down like that it won't look like it fits right.

Is the alt in wrong? because it is bolted down....

Traveler

refering to the above pic, loosen the bolt on the left and swing the whole thing up.

Just as if you were adjusting the belt tension.

Look at the top pic on this page.

The bolt on the left is at 7 o'clock, and the other is at 1 o'clock

In the second pick the bolt on the right is at 3 o'clock. Move it back up to 1 o'clock and the bracket will fit.

That explains why the bracket wouldn't fit, so the alt is not meant to lay down in that cubby just hang over it. sweet this should be pretty easy to button up tonight. Only thing that makes me a little nervous is the amount of empty bolt holes, I used every single bolt I took out and another 10 or so I bought and there are still empty holes. Did the engine lose that many bolts over time????

I know it lost at least a couple because when I did the in line fuel pump I found a bolt laying on the rail that I did not know what went to and now that I have seen the engine bolts I know it was one of those. I also know why the smog pump was moving around so much the 6 inch bolt that holds it in place on the one side was missing. I replaced that last night as well and have been using grade 8 bolt replacements for everything replaced.

I haven't see anything missing yet. THere are a lot of bolt holes that don't go anywhere, or they are there for brackets your truck does not need.
If that is the only pile of parts you have left, then you got most of them.

I circled one part and I am wondering if you know where it goes? or went?

It is can be used as a spacer on the long bolt through the alternator, it helps keep it tight, and keeps the brackets from getting bent. It could go somewhere else, just wanted to check and makesure it didn't get left out.

Audra

Actually that entire parts pile is brand new. All of the original bolts are in place. The three bolts marked in red are original ones whose holes were plugged with new hardware. I used those 3 bolts so I could go buy more at the hardware store.

For anyone needing engine bolts, lowes sucks, home depot sucks, but ace hardware has a huge selection of grade 8 bolts in all of the right lengths.

The thing you circled if you look closer is actually two brand new washers laying on each othergiving an illusion of depth. None of the Original hardware is not installed at this point. I just happen to think some of my leak issues could be caused by lack of a bolt to fill in the hole :/

#### I have no idea what I am doing, but I think it is turning out ok http://www.fourdoorbronco.com/temp/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

With as much as you've helped me supply the beer (smirnoff twisted madarin orange), and give me a time and date LMAO

wait, your truck doesn't leak 1-2qts of oil daily http://www.fourdoorbronco.com/temp/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

But if it did you know I wouldn't even hesitate. Might bitch a little bit on the hard parts, but nothing I didn't do to my truck http://www.fourdoorbronco.com/temp/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

in that first picture the oil doesn't look good looks almost like antifreeze, please tell me that this is just an opticall illusion or from my dying monitor here at work or some flash effect.

I was gonna ask you how the test drive went but guess you didn't make it that far. it's all in the details.

Audra
11-05-2004, 10:10 AM
That is antifreeze in the oil, part of why I had to drop out the oil before even thinking about starting it.

I could have swore it was like a half of a gallon when under the truck, but it is more like 2 cups http://www.fourdoorbronco.com/temp/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

That is normal

I know why the original belt went. The bolts that at one time held in the smog pump were missing which rocked the one belt which pulled the pully the water pump was on which caused the water pump to go bad which took out the other belt. Yeesh. I am so glad I tore everything apart, with all of the issues hiding in there I would have had to do it in the next year anyways.

This would have been done 3 days sooner exceprt that I broke a bolt in the engine ?http://www.fourdoorbronco.com/temp/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/down.gif ?And then I couldn't get it out even with two different style extractor kits so then I had to drill a new set of grooves through the middle of the old bolt for a different size bolt and seal it that way http://www.fourdoorbronco.com/temp/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Worked like a charm. ? http://www.fourdoorbronco.com/temp/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rockon.gif
