So got under the truck last night in an effort to make the silly ABS light turn off and because my speedometor wobbles.

Went all the way back to the pumpkin and decided it was time to take out the VSS and clean it to see if that would help.

Of course since my truck leaks oil like a sieve yours will be much much cleaner than the greasy mess I deal with. Closeup of the VSS. Arrows point out the 2 clips on each side that have to be pulled outwards to unplug it.

So I unplug that and clean it up and then start thinking about taking out the base. It takes a 13mm ratchet or wrench, you get the idea. The circle is showing where the bolt is. Once again mine was on tight beyond all belief. Used some pb blaster to loosen it and attached the handle of my bottle jack to give me more leverage on the push. Broke it loose and took the base up and out. When pulling it out don't just grab that front part or it will fight you. If you grab the back part and pull it up at the same time it comes up and out real easy. and yes that was another hard lesson learned.

This is what you end up pulling out. I cleaned it up quite a bit too.

ok, so plug it in and get it all back together and test drive it. No real improvement whatsoever. So tonight I will put a new one in. If it was just dirty the ABS light should have turned off and the speedometer should have stopped wobbling.

Is it just me, or does that new VSS look like it is not seated down in there all the way.

If it is not close enough to the tone ring, it will not read right either.

The mounting bracket on the new one has a "kick" to it. Maybe it isn't setting down because of that? *http://www.fourdoorbronco.com/temp/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/shrug.gif

That is what took me so long, I don't like it either!

Well I don't think you have it in all the way, if you look at the last pic on the first page, you can see just a little orange color, that is the o-ring.
That should not be visible. Pretty hard to tell from here.

I think if you wiggle it and try to push it in farther, it may make a difference.

The mount must just be there as a safety, they must not expect it so actually pull it into place.

Just for kicks have you checked with the stealership, oh sorry dealership, to see if their vss is still one of the flat one's?

hehehe, well if you look at the pics you'll notice they were taken before it was bolted down ;)

I can check again tonight and make sure that bolting it down pushed it all the way in

The factory ford ones go all the time... They arent expensive but they fit the best and opperate propperly.. My dealership had a problem with brakes locking up from an aftermarket that was for the wrong vehicle... It sent the wrong voltage and threw stuff off. but it should be sitting deeper and flush also looks realy dry {THE SENSOR} hows the fluid?http://www.fourdoorbronco.com/temp/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif??

It ended up having a different year rear end for parts. Go figure. I didn't know it had been changed out.

Your speedo is driven off of a cable. The VSS didn't do the speedo and odo untill 92.

uhm yeah, kinda figured that out. So why didn't you bring this up two years ago? http://www.fourdoorbronco.com/temp/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/Oo.gif

Erik found the problem, turned out to be a broken wire.
